When silence becomes the breakthrough.

“Listening requires the ability to be present without control.”  Eckhart Tolle

I recently completed the CDI- Africa Global Diploma in Professional Coaching and earned my Certified Professional Coach qualification. One of the most powerful lessons I continue to learn is the power of silence. On my promotional poster, I wrote:

“Coaching has been a transformative learning experience for me. It has helped me uncover personal insights I had not previously confronted, especially in how I communicate and how my personality shapes my effectiveness as a coach.

One lesson is the power of silence; it speaks volumes. I now listen more intentionally, resisting the urge to interrupt or offer solutions and instead create space for reflection. Coaching is not about perfection but helping the client gain clarity”.

Silence is not easy. If I am honest, it does not come naturally to me. For many of us we often feel the urge to jump in, fix, or fill the pause. It makes me wonder why active listening can be so difficult, even when we know how much it matters. Yet silence is where the real breakthroughs happen. It is in those moments that clients uncover what has been holding them back, whether in career transitions, conflict resolution, or personal growth.

For me, active listening starts with paying full attention. That sounds simple, but it is not. We are often distracted by our own thoughts, emotions, assumptions, and the urge to prepare an answer before the other person has finished speaking.

There are also the everyday distractions around us, like phones, notifications, noise, multitasking, and the pressure to move quickly. When that happens, we may hear words but miss the meaning, emotion, and what is really being said.

Through coaching, I have discovered that listening is not passive. It is an active practice of being fully present, suspending judgment, and creating space for reflection. This is where trust is built, relationships are strengthened, barriers dissolve, and transformation begins.

For anyone navigating change, early career, mid‑journey, or later stages of life, the challenge often isn’t knowing what to do, but having someone who can hold space for your process without rushing to control it. That is the gift coaching has given me. As I continue to grow in this practice, I welcome you into this space of growth, reflection, and learning moments.

👉 I’d love to hear from you: What has silence taught you about listening in your work, relationships, or personal growth?
